Green Tips: Plastic Free Bread

July 23, 2025 Blog No Comments

“And day by day, attending the temple together and breaking bread in their homes, they partook of food with glad and generous hearts.” (Acts 2:46)

Making your own bread is a great way to cut down on the plastic bags from storebought breads. Here’s Nancy Reed’s “Wry Bread” recipe:

  • 2 packages of yeast
  • 2 cup warm water
  • 1 envelope of onion soup
  • 1/3 cup sugar
  • 2 TBSP molasses
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 egg (or for vegans, use 2 TBSP of aquafaba, the protein rich juice from a can of chick peas)
  • 1/3 cup soft butter
  • 6-6 ½ cups of flour (once again, play around with a variety)
  1. Dissolve yeast in water. Add soup and dissolve.
  2. Add remaining ingredients.
  3. Knead and cover in a greased bowl.
  4. Allow to rise 1 hour then punch down.
  5. Divide into 3 ropes and braid.  Brush with butter.
  6. Allow to rise 40 min.
  7. Bake at 375 for 25-30 min.

Stay tuned as we share more recipes to help replace plastic-heavy store products. Do you have a recipe to share that would help us avoid plastic containers?
