Green Tips: Plastic Free Bread

July 15, 2025 Blog No Comments

“They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer.” (Acts 2:42)

Bread in plastic: Ever thought of making your own bread? I cannot think of a bread at the grocery store that does not come in a plastic bag. And bread from the store shelf has preservatives and possibly other undesirables. You can make your own with a variety of healthy flours.

Terry David has provided us with an incredibly simple recipe for beer bread. No yeast. No rising. No punching down. Just mix and bake. Oh, you do need to grease the pan.

  1.  Preheat oven to 350 degrees and grease a loaf pan
  2. Mix 3 cups of flour (I have used white, wheat, quinoa, garbanzo bean, almond – usually a mixture of several), 3 ¾ tsp baking powder, 2 ¼  tsp salt, 2 Tbsp sugar.
  3. Add a 12 ounce bottle of beer. I especially like the pumpkin ale in the Fall. Mix and the dough will be stiff.
  4. Bake 20 min then brush top with melted butter
  5. Bake an additional 25 min and behold bread! Let it cool in the pan a little while to make it easier to get out. No preservatives so after a few days, store in the refrigerator. If you use a new plastic bag for storage, you will have defeated one of the purposes of this project. So reuse a bag or place in a reusable container.

Stay tuned as we share more recipes to help replace plastic-heavy store products. Do you have a recipe to share that would help us avoid plastic containers?
