Green Tips: Heat Pumps

July 7, 2024 Blog No Comments

“Consider how the lilies of the field grow. They do not labor or spin. Yet I tell you that not even Solomon in all his glory was adorned like one of these.… ”  (Matthew 6:28-29)

What are heat pumps?  Heat from fossil fuels comes from burning.  Heat from heat pumps comes from moving heat from one place to another.  During winter, heat pumps move heat from outside to inside.  Heat pumps will work even in very cold weather as there is always some heat in the air.  Heat pumps run on electricity which is more efficient even when the electricity comes from burning coal or natural gas.  But using renewable energy for electricity is the healthiest way to heat and cool our homes.  Speaking of cool, heat pumps are also air conditioners.  In the summertime, they move heat from inside the home to outside keeping us cool and comfortable inside.

Duke Energy (https://finditduke.duke-energy.com/offers-and-rebates) offers rebates for heat pumps and other energy efficient equipment.  And Rewiring America (https://homes.rewiringamerica.org/calculator)  has a tax credit calculator for energy efficiency including heat pumps based on your home location, size, and income.
