Green Tips: Plastic Free July

June 18, 2025 Blog No Comments

“The Lord God took man and put him in the Garden of Eden to till it and keep it.” (Genesis 2:15)

What is wrong with plastics?

  • 79% has accumulated in landfill or in the natural environment
  • 12% has been incinerated
  • 9% has been recycled

Plastics don’t break down, they break up, becoming a permanent pollutant in our environment.  We cannot recycle our way out of this pollution.

What can we do?  The green team will have a new solution to decreasing plastic use every week

Vegetables – Please do not feel you have to put large veggies or fruit in a plastic bag to check out.  For instance, 1.  Buy corn on the cob in the shucks (peel off a few of the shucks and microwave the cob – shucks and all for 4 min per ear.  The shucks and silk will fall right off!)   2.  If you are buying green beans or Brussel sprouts, bring your own previously used plastic bag.

Think before you reach for a new single use plastic bag.  Our challenge is to have a plastic free July!

More information can be found at https://www.plasticfreejuly.org/the-plastic-pollution-issues/                            .
