September 2011

A while back a friend of mine, who was also a Sunday School teacher, asked me a question.  She said, “Randy, let’s say you could eat whatever you wanted and as much as you wanted, but you could only eat this meal for one hour on Sunday morning.  This meal would have to last you for the whole week.  How healthy do you think you would be?”  I answered that I would be great for a couple of hours on Sunday but soon would get grumpy and hungry and not too nice to be around.  She then said, “Well, that is how some people feed themselves spiritually! We go to church on Sunday and worship and then starve for the rest of the week.”  I knew my friend was trying to influence me and I also knew she was right.  For many of us, our only spiritual meal comes from worship Sunday mornings and the rest of the week we starve.  It doesn’t have to be this way.
Presbyterians are well known as encouragers of education.  These efforts are demonstrated by Presbyterian’s founding and sponsoring universities and colleges, requiring clergy to have advanced degrees, and funding scholarships for advanced learning. Crescent Springs Presbyterian Church (CSPC) is no different.
One of the contributing factors in our Session’s decision to establish two worship services was to allow adequate time for Christian education in between worship services.  Our new schedule will allow for at least an hour between the services for the congregation to gather and study God’s Word together.  In my opinion, the shared experience of learning about God together in a small group setting can be the most influential in the spiritual development of believers.  When I teach classes, one of the first things I mention is, “Y’all will get out of this class what you are willing to put into it.”  Sunday school is no different.  This year CSPC has a great opportunity to grow together as the body of Christ through our Sunday School program.  In fact, one of the marks of a healthy church is the strength of its education programs and the Session is devoted to developing, improving and building on the solid foundations already found at CSPC.
Please join us at 9:45 Sunday mornings for Sunday school beginning September 11.
The Learning Committee has been hard at work finding and equipping teachers for this new school year.  CSPC offers a variety of opportunities for all ages and you can find a description of classes in this newsletter.  Also on Sunday, September 4, CSPC will be awarding Bibles to our young readers to encourage them in a lifelong study of God’s Word.  I am excited at the prospect of young readers being supported in reading Bibles of their own.
I look forward to seeing y’all in classes this next year. It’s your chance to be fed--don’t go hungry!

God Bless, Randy

On Sunday, September 11, CSPC will offer some exciting new experiences for Sunday mornings. Two Worship Options—New Times
At 8:30, CSPC will offer a more contemporary, experiential worship service. At 11:11, a more traditional worship service will begin. The CSPC Session has taken a more active leadership role in planning these two worship opportunities. Please plan on worshipping with us at the time, and in the way, that fits you and your family.

Don’t Go Back to School, Until . . . you check out www.d365.org. This website offers a short daily devotional written especially for youth and college students. (Adults are welcome, too.) During this back-to-school season, the messages are focused on spiritual preparations for the new school year.
. . . and until, you update your contact info with the CSPC office. We want you to receive the Clarion, e-mail blasts and generally stay in touch. So, use the link on the CSPC homepage (www.cspresby.com) or go old school and leave a voice mail at 341-9347.

See you in Sunday School!
The new Sunday School year will also begin on September 11. Classes for all ages begin at 9:45 and dismiss at 10:45 to allow a few minutes for fellowship before and after class.

There are learning options for all ages:

  • The nursery will be available for children under two years of age, so that moms and dads can attend the adult class of their choice.
  • The pre-school class is for children who haven’t yet started kindergarten. It will be taught by Sarah Cottongim and will be learning Superheroes of the Bible.
  • The primary class (grades K through two) will be taught by Carol Buckhout and follow the Presbyterian “We Believe” curriculum, with lessons for all learning styles.
  • Crystal Harden will teach the elementary class (grades 3 through 5). It will also follow the “We Believe” curriculum for that age group.
  • Doug Thompson will lead the middle school class (grades 6-8), with a curriculum that will prepares the students for confirmation.
  • High school students will meet with a series of CSPC members who have volunteered to lead the class in Bible study of the New Testament.
  • Adults have two learning options: a study of the Book of Acts taught by Rev. Schafer or “The Everyday Christian”, a series of studies that vary from one to seven weeks and examine topics that impact Christians in their work, community and family life.

This fall offerings from Sunday School classes will be given to the River Ridge Family Resource Center.

Got Virtus?
If you work with children or youth at CSPC, you need to attend Virtus, a training program that explains risks to children and youth and shows volunteers how to keep them protected from these risks. The training is also suggested if you wish to volunteer at IHN. Virtus is offered through the Catholic Diocese with more information at www.virtus.org.

The Learning Committee is assembling a list of all church members who have already received Virtus training.  If you have participated, contact Terry David and she will add you to the list.

Sound System Training –
A Resume Builder?
Rev. Schafer will be leading a training event on our sanctuary sound system. We currently have five people who are interested in training, but would like to have more. Not only can you help with the sound system in our two services, but you can add this skill to your resume (and maybe become a “roadie”!). Contact Rev. Schafer or Crystal Harden if you’re interested, so we can set up a training class as soon as possible.

Prepare to Picnic!
The annual CSPC picnic will follow the 11:11 worship service on Sunday, September 18 at Crescent Springs Park (about 12:30).  Plan on bringing meat to grill (if you wish) and a favorite picnic dish to share. Also, bring along outdoor games for both kids and adults. The Fellowship Committee will have beverages, plates, cups, and ice.

Ready, Set, Go! For Sunday School
Thanks to the volunteers who cleaned and organized Sunday School rooms so that all is ready for new fall classes. See you on September 11!

While the classrooms were being cleaned inside, another group of volunteers re-built the drainage around the church foundation and took care of our landscaping. Thanks to this group, as well. It made Work Day a big success!
