Happy New Year—2012!!

I trust that 2012 will be a joyous and healthy year for all. If the year past was difficult for you or someone you know, may this year be one of new and blessed beginnings.

New beginnings are important for all of us—even if we’re getting old enough not to enjoy changes as much as we perhaps used to. New beginnings help keep us alert and active physically, mentally, and spiritually. New beginnings work to give us life, keeping negative thoughts and feelings from taking the joy of life away from us. One of these negatives is characterized by the phrase, “It’ll never work.”

I received an article last month sometime with these examples of things that people thought would never work.

* “Heavier-than-air flying machines are impossible.” (Lord Kelvin, British mathematician and physicist, 1895)

* “The horse is here to stay, but the automobile is only a novelty-a fad.” (President of Michigan Savings Bank advising Henry Ford’s lawyer not to invest in Ford Motor Company, 1903)

* “There is no reason anyone would want a computer in their home. “ (Ken Olson, president of Digital Equipment Corp., 1977)

These were well-respected people who had let negativity take control of their vision for the future. They were afraid of new ideas, uncomfortable with changes. It happens both outside of, and inside ,the church.

At CSPC we have a new year in front of us. We can make this year a year of life and joy as we grow together in Christ.

Jesus reminds us in Luke 5, “No one tears a piece from a new garment and sews it on an old one … and no one puts new wine into old wineskins … But the new wine must be put into fresh wineskins.”

May the changes of this New Year be pleasant for you. And may you be open to the changes God will provide.

Happy New Year!
Pastor Randy

About CSPC’s Per Capital Assessment

Each year Presbyterian congregations pay an assessment to fund the life and mission of our national denomination, including our Presbytery, Synod, General Assembly and mission work. The assessment is paid for each active member of the congregation, based on the previous year’s rolls.

You can participate directly in the life of our church universal AND help CSPC’s budget situation by contributing your per capita assessment of $27.80, using the giving envelope provided for that purpose.

Mission Update

Thanks to the Helping Hands of everyone at CSPC, we were able to fill 27 Christmas baskets. Twenty were given to families through the family resource center at River Ridge Elementary School and seven were distributed to other families with needs. We also provided 60 gifts to River Ridge families and one family through IHN.

January needs at River Ridge

The Deacons have made a decision to provide ongoing mission support to River Ridge. During January, their “wish list” is for children’s underwear, sizes 4 to 12, for both boys and girls. Drop off donations to the shopping cart in the Narthex.

Stewardship Campaign Update

2012 stewardship envelopes are in the mailboxes. If yours are missing or you’d like to have envelopes, contact Karen Greenhow at glk47karen@aol.com or 380-0632.

Let’s Stay in Touch

The Deacons are updating our church directory. If someone in your household has had a change of address, e-mail address or phone number, please send the information to Joe Johnson, johnsonjose82@aol.com.

Nursery Expansion and Classroom Changes

Work is underway to expand our facilities for the youngest folks at CSPC. A new doorway now connects the nursery to the classroom next door. This classroom will soon be used for the pre-school class during Sunday School and the doorway will allow the room to be used for play space when the nursery is crowded.

When the preschoolers move, some other Sunday School classes will move, as well, so that the space better fits the classes’ needs.

Thanks to the work crew that is making this possible! Stop by and see their progress.
