Friends, |
The Christmas season is upon us. For many this is a time of year for
decorating, shopping, family, shopping, friends, shopping, eating,
shopping, sending cards, shopping and then shopping some more. Since
“Black Friday”, I have been pondering what Jesus would think about how
we observe Christmas.
I recently read an article from World magazine that questioned the
origins of Christmas and many of the traditions we hold dear and
discussed whether modern ideas of celebrating Christmas are harmful to
children. While I disagree with many of the assertions in the article, I
do think it is healthy for us to consider how, why, or even if, we are
worshiping God this Christmas season.
For many, the Christmas season fills with stress due to over-filled
schedules, over consumption of food and drink, over-extended budgets,
and over-the-top materialism and consumerism. For this pastor, this
leads to the question of how can we scale back on the stress and
emphasize love of God and love of others. This season is a time when
pondering priorities in life is most important. This season is a time
for aligning belief in God with daily spiritual practice, giving peace
and contentment a foothold by understanding that Christmas is the
celebration of life with Christ.
May I be so bold to suggest beginning this season with taking time each
day to spend time in God’s Word, giving Him the first thoughts of the
day and first opportunity to arrange our priorities and schedules? I
know that taking a bit of quiet time with God provides a sense of peace
and oneness with our creator. This foundation allows building into life
relationships that are meaningful and activities that are life-giving
and Christ-centered. This season celebrates life with God and sharing
life with others. Therefore, today, right now, take a deep breath, close
your eyes, and chat with God. Separate from the hustle and bustle of the
world for a bit and let God speak to your heart.
|
|
The central meaning of Christmas is apparent through naming the Christ Child
Emanuel, “God with us”. The creator of the universe came to earth to be one
with us, to bring us His message of hope and peace. Our response during this
Christmas time can either be to fill our lives with distractions or to join
our lives with Christ and enjoy authentic hope and peace. Brothers and
sisters in Christ, let’s buck the trend, scale it back a bit, and enjoy the
gift of life that God gives us by spending time with Him. Turn off the TV,
unplug the iPod, log off the internet, and give shopping a break. Take time
to be with God and celebrate this season remembering that God is with us.
Then dwell with the peace that surpasses all understanding in our Lord Jesus
Christ.

Stewardship is a year-round event. So
if you haven’t yet turned in your pledge card, it’s not too late.
Session will be completing the 2012 budget at its Dec. 12 meeting.

Operation Baby King The
Wednesday practices are underway and soon CSPC will be treated to
Operation Baby King, the children’s Advent program. The program will
begin
at 6: 30 PM on Sunday, Dec. 18. Plan on bringing your favorite dish to
share at the potluck dinner which will precede the program, beginning at
5:30 PM. The children’s program is a time to prepare
our hearts during Advent and enjoy fellowship with the CSPC family.
